The trench on either side of a bowling lane that must be avoided for a ball to knock down any pins. The synthetic lanes are easier to maintain and do not require any type of resurfacing. On each side of the bowling lane sits a gutter a dipped trench that is usually made out of rubber or plastic. On either side of the lane are gutters.
